Volunteers attend 30 hours of training covering areas such as: child abuse and neglect, court room procedures, court report writing, interviewing and fact-finding, substance abuse, child development, cultural awareness, child welfare law, and other topics that involve child welfare.  There are also opportunities to speak with current CASA volunteers. During training, volunteers have the opportunity to visit court and are expected to write a draft court report. After volunteers complete the training, a district judge will swear them in as officers of the court, which is the first step to being appointed as an advocate.

After being appointed to a case, volunteers continue to participate in continuing education trainings. These are offered monthly through the CASA office. Volunteers are expected to complete 12 hours of continuing education a year, which can include those provided by CASA as well as other trainings in the community.

CASA trainings are currently offered four times a year.

We are offering two evening trainings from 6-9 pm, for 5 weeks one on Wednesday in the spring and one on a Tuesday in the fall.

The summer training is scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings for 3 weeks from 6 – 9 pm.

We are offering a daytime training this winter on Thursdays from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm for five weeks.

These trainings require 15 hours of online coursework. The online coursework needs to be completed weekly after each class for the five week sessions, and within two days after class for the three week session, as the online component is interactive.

To be eligible to attend training you need to begin the application process prior to the start of the training. If you have any questions or potential conflicts, please contact the Training Coordinator, Andrea Durkin at 443-3197 or
